Yard Debris Cleanup in Cincinnati: Why a 20-Yard Dumpster Is the Right Call
Yard work in Cincinnati doesn't stay small. You start with one overgrown bed along the fence line, and three Saturdays later you've got a pile of brush, branches, old mulch, root balls, and busted landscape timbers stacked behind the garage. Or a storm rolls through Hyde Park or Westwood and suddenly half your back yard is on the ground.
This is the project a 20-yard dumpster was built for.

Why a 20-Yard for Yard Debris (and Not a 10 or 15)
Yard waste is bulky but not heavy — exactly the wrong combination for a small dumpster. Branches don't stack flat. Brush springs back. Root balls take up four times their own volume because nothing else can pack around them.
Here's the rough math we see on Cincinnati jobs:
- 10-yard — Fine for a single small tree trim or one flowerbed redo. You will fill it faster than you think.
- 15-yard — Good for a moderate cleanup: a few overgrown beds, hedge removal, a half-day of pruning.
- 20-yard — The right call for storm cleanup, full landscape overhauls, multi-tree trimming, fence-line clearing, or any project where you're hauling out by trailer-load.
What Counts as "Yard Debris"
Goes in the dumpster without issue:
- Branches, limbs, and small logs
- Brush, hedge clippings, and vines
- Leaves, pine needles, grass clippings (bagged is easier to load)
- Root balls and stumps (small to medium — call us on anything over 24 in. across)
- Old mulch and pine straw
- Sod (in moderation — see weight note below)
- Landscape timbers, broken fence boards, lattice
- Pots, planters, edging, drip line, and other landscape junk
How to Load a 20-Yard for Yard Debris (the Right Way)
You will fit roughly 30-40% more material if you load it right.
1. Cut branches down. Anything over 4 ft long should get chopped. Long limbs trap air and waste cubic yardage. A bow saw or sawzall with a pruning blade is your friend. 2. Heavy stuff first, flat on the floor. Logs, root balls, dirt, sod — these go in first along the floor of the can. Don't toss them on top. 3. Brush and vines next, packed in tight. Stomp it down. Yes, climb in and walk on it. Brush compresses surprisingly well when you put weight on it. 4. Leaves and clippings as filler. Use bagged leaves and grass to fill the air pockets between branches. 5. Don't dome it. Material has to sit at or below the top rail so we can legally tarp and haul it. A 20-yard with a 2-ft mound on top has to be reloaded before we can leave — which means you're working in the heat instead of grilling.
Cincinnati-Specific Tips
- Storm cleanup season runs March-July. When a line of storms blows through and Duke is still restoring power, dumpsters book out fast. Same-day delivery is available before 5pm EST — call early in the day if a storm hit overnight.
- Hilltop neighborhoods. Mt. Lookout, Mt. Adams, Price Hill — narrow streets, steep driveways. Tell us about the approach when you book so we send the right truck.
- City of Cincinnati permits. Putting the dumpster on a public street (not your driveway) requires a Right-of-Way permit from the city. On grass or driveway, no permit needed. Most Cincinnati yard debris jobs end up driveway-placed, which is the easy path.
- Driveway protection. We set the can on wood planks every time — no scratches, no oil, no cracked concrete.
Real Pricing
- 20-yard dumpster, 24-hour rental: $199 base, includes 2,000 lbs (1 ton)
- Extra days: $25/day
- Weight overage: $75 per additional ton
- Same-day delivery: Free if booked before 5pm EST
When a 20-Yard Isn't Enough
If you're clearing more than a quarter-acre of overgrowth, taking down multiple full trees, or doing a full property reclamation, you may need a second haul. Two 20-yard loads is almost always cheaper and more flexible than trying to upsize to a roll-off we don't carry — and we can swap the same can out in a single afternoon.
FAQ
Can I put a whole tree in a 20-yard dumpster?
A small to medium tree, yes — cut into 4-ft sections. A full mature oak with the stump intact? You'll need it cut down further or you'll need two loads. Stumps over 24 in. across should be a heads-up call. Can I mix yard debris with other junk?
Yes. Most homeowners do. Old patio furniture, broken planters, the rotted shed door — toss it in. The only things that can't go in are hazardous materials, tires, batteries, paint, and electronics.Do I need a permit for my driveway?
No. Permits only apply if the dumpster sits on a public street. Driveway and yard placement are permit-free.How long can I keep it?
Standard is 24 hours, but most yard debris projects need 3-7 days. Just tell us when you book — extra days are $25 each. What if it rains?
Cover it with a tarp if you can. Wet yard debris is heavier and counts against your weight allowance.Ready to Clean It Up?
