Bathroom Renovation Dumpster Guide: What Size Do You Need?
Bathroom renovations are one of the most common home improvement projects in the Cincinnati area. They're also one of the messiest. Old tile, drywall, vanities, tubs — it adds up fast, and your regular trash pickup isn't going to touch it.
Here's everything you need to know about renting a dumpster for a bathroom renovation.
How Much Debris Does a Bathroom Renovation Create?
More than you think. A standard bathroom gut-and-remodel typically generates:
- Tile and flooring — ceramic, vinyl, or linoleum (heavier than it looks)
- Drywall — walls and ceiling panels
- Vanity and cabinets — bulky but not super heavy
- Bathtub or shower surround — cast iron tubs are very heavy; fiberglass is lighter
- Toilet — yes, the whole thing
- Trim, baseboards, and misc lumber
- Old plumbing fixtures

What Dumpster Size Do You Need?
For most bathroom renovations, here's our recommendation:
- Single bathroom remodel — A 10-yard dumpster ($199) handles it perfectly. That's about 3 pickup truck loads of debris.
- Two bathrooms or a bathroom plus another room — Go with a 15-yard dumpster ($199 + $0.09/lb). Gives you breathing room.
- Full gut renovation with multiple rooms — The 20-yard dumpster ($199 + $0.09/lb) is your best bet.
Tips to Make Your Bathroom Demo Go Smoothly
1. Get the Dumpster Before You Start Demolition
This seems obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people start swinging a sledgehammer and then realize they have nowhere to put the debris. Have the dumpster in your driveway before demo day.
2. Protect Your Floors
You're going to be hauling heavy debris through your house. Lay down drop cloths or old cardboard along the path from the bathroom to the dumpster. Your hardwood floors will thank you.
3. Shut Off the Water First
Again, seems obvious. But in the excitement of demo day, people forget. Shut off the water supply to the bathroom before you disconnect anything.
4. Sort as You Go
Separate materials as you tear them out. Metal fixtures can often be recycled. Lumber that isn't rotted can sometimes be reused. Everything else goes in the dumpster.
5. Don't Overload the Dumpster
There's a fill line on our dumpsters for a reason. If debris is sticking up above the top, we can't safely transport it. Pack it smart — break down large pieces and lay them flat.
What Can't Go in the Dumpster?
Most bathroom renovation debris is fine, but there are a few things we can't take:
- Paint cans (unless completely dried out)
- Chemicals or solvents
- Asbestos-containing materials (common in older Cincinnati homes — the Ohio EPA has disposal guidelines and recommends getting it tested if your house was built before 1980)
